A Day At Disneyland

Eleanor turned four this month, and Disneyland was what her heart desired. Seeing the expressions on her face when she met Mickey Mouse, and her favorites characters were priceless. Join us for a fun filled day at the “happiest place on earth.”

Our first stop was Toontown, where Pluto greeted us. Pluto, also called Pluto the Pup, is a cartoon dog created in 1930 at Walt Disney Productions. Walt was inspired to create Disney’s top dog by remembering the personable pooches he met while living on the farm in his childhood home of Marceline, Missouri. Ever since Pluto has, as Walt put it, been “working hard and trying, but usually not succeeding, in staying out of trouble.” Pluto is Mickey’s pet.

Meeting Alice was Eleanor’s favorite experience. Alice in Wonderland is a 1951 American animated musical fantasy-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Productions and based on the Alice books by Lewis Carroll. The 13th of Disney’s animated features, the film premiered in New York City and London on July 26, 1951. The Mad Hatter wished Eleanor the happiest of birthdays.

A day at the Magic Kingdom is not enough time to see all Disneyland has to offer, but we made the most of it. “It’s a Small World,” walking with the “Beast,” meeting “Snow White, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Minnie Mouse,” riding in the tea cups, pictures, popcorn and souvenirs made this the best day ever!

If you have a Disneyland experience to share feel free to share in the comments.

MOXI

Eleanor said, “daddy let’s go on a date after school.” How could I resist? She has been such a help around the house and her teacher gave her the honor of being the leader today, that I said, “we can go anywhere you want.” Of course the MOXI was the first on the list.

After 20 years the dream became a reality. The MOXI opened February 25, 2017, after years of work by a determined and tireless group of volunteers, businesses, and foundations.

Their mission is to ignite learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity.

Feel free to leave your expectations at the door and get ready to discover, play and engage in a new way. Three floors of interactive experiences, organized around seven themes that all relate to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math awaits visitors daily.

We enjoy exploring the world of light, color, and shadows in this area where you can create a bold display of light patterns combined with the color mixing machine. Make sure to take the ultimate selfie at the mosaic faces exhibit.

“Are we having fun yet!”

Enjoy your day at the MOXI.

Please share your experience with us in the comments.

EARTH DAY

The City of Santa Barbara hosts the two day Earth Day festival that includes live music, delicious food, and activities for the whole family. With support from sponsors: Community Environmental Council, Loa Tree, +One Events, New Noise, Firestone Walker 805 Beer and over 250 volunteers, Alameda Park is transformed into a sustainably conscious playground rooted in environmental action and awareness. It’s fun and exciting learning about everything our community is working on to improve our environment.

Eleanor is doing her best balancing. She did a great job. We were impressed! “One small step…”.

In the barrel of a plastic wave. Thank you to iSurfSchool, Green Project Consultants and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for this image reminding us to protect our oceans.

Island Seed and Feed, is an all natural pet, garden and farm supply store in Goleta. They are guided by principles of urban sustainability, organic horticulture, and community responsibility.

We purchased seeds from High Mowing Organic Seeds, to start a tiny backyard garden. Eleanor has been asking us for a while to start one, so this was perfect timing. Now, it’s time to get to work!

We’re ready to plant yellow squash, Romanesco zucchini, little leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce and golden California wonder sweet peppers. Excited to get started!

Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association, is a nonprofit organization emphasizing, education, awareness and honeybee preservation to the community.

Making a stop at Mcconnell’s ice cream was a must! It’s creamy and delicious. Their ingredients are local, sustainable and organic. Yes, Please!

Fun in the funk zone!

Hi friends!

Dave and I have been having a great time switching back and forth, sharing posts.  Hope you are enjoying them.

If you follow me on Instagram, here or here, then you know that I’ve been trying to trade in work for a little more play with Eleanor. Never trying to achieve balance (that word puts too much pressure on me), just trying to create as many memories with her as possible.

One of our favorite places to hang in Santa Barbara is the Funk Zone. You can find great food, yummy treats, fun shops and amazing art. Some of our favorites are:  Helena Avenue Bakery, they have amazing coffee and croissants, that melt in your mouth. We also love checking out Blue Door, they have amazing vintage and mid century furniture along with home decor.  Another favorite foodie spot is Lucky Penny, this is a great lunch spot. Casual, easy, yummy, and if you have little ones it’s perfect.

We are all always looking for the perfect instagrammable spots, right?! Well, there are plenty of them in the Funk Zone.

One of Eleanor’s favorite places to stop are the faces painted on the walls along Yanonali Street. They are fun, vibrant colors. All of them are painted by artist, David Flores.

If you walk a little out of the Funk Zone perimeter you will see the Moxi Museum, which is the children’s museum.  It’s a fun, science-based, great for all ages place for the family.

If you happen to find yourself in Santa Barbara be sure to check out these fun places. The whole zone is a fun experience. You can rent bikes and cruise around. There are also great hotels to stay at in the Funk Zone.  Hotel Californian, is a new modern luxury hotel, that’s amazing! We love going to the Goat Tree for breakfast.  It’s all fresh, healthy food.

We hope you enjoyed following along in one of our favorite parts of our city. Above is a small map outlining the Funk Zone. You can also click here to see a larger version. I’d love to hear if you have any favorite parts of Santa Barbara that you have enjoyed while visiting.  I love hearing an outsiders view of our city.

Wishing you all a great weekend!

FOODIE SPOTLIGHT

Welcome to Empty Bowl Gourmet Noodle Bar. The line begins here, (you’ll be lucky if there is no line, the good news is, if there is, it moves quickly).

Life’s amazing, and of the many gifts we receive, the people we meet and the relationships we build along the way are the most enduring. Emre is one of those people. He is originally from Turkey and moved here nine years ago.

April 15, 2014, Emre opened Empty Bowl inside the Santa Barbara Public Market. Winner of the 2017 Santa Barbara Independent: Best of Santa Barbara Noodle Bar, his passion, and spirit for life and food are easily noticed as you place your order at the bar or take out counter.

Niki, Eleanor, and I were invited to the four year anniversary celebration last Sunday, and we loved every dish. We ordered the Larb Lettuce Tacos, Mama’s Hand Wrapped ” JIAOZI ” Pot Stickers, Pad Thai Khao San Road, and Pan Fried Pancit Noodle. The Summer Rolls and Roasted Duck Buns are extremely popular, so show up early!

On the menu is a great selection of beer and wine to quench your thirst.

So, if you’re just visiting or a local and craving Thai comfort street food, look no further.

Check ’em out on Instagram, @emptybowlnoodle

A DAY IN THE PARKS

Eleanor and I are so excited to share this post with you. Today is moms day off, so we are off to the parks. We are so fortunate to live around the block from the Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens and Kid’s World at Alameda Park.

It may not look like it, but we’ve been up since 4:30 am.

I did say we live right around the corner from the parks, but I thought it would be a good idea to drive just in case Eleanor came up with a different plan.

We enjoy feeding the ducks and turtles at the garden koi pond.

The Memorial Garden features a collection of 75 different trees, and plant species. The Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden Self-Guided Tree & Plant Tour includes a sensory garden with audio posts, interpretive Braille signs, walking paths, picnic areas; and Gazebo.

A butterfly garden includes host plants for butterflies and moths.

Moving right along, we spent the rest of the day swinging and sliding at Kids World.

We hope you enjoyed your day in the parks with us.

JOINING THE TEAM

I am so excited to announce that I will be a contributing member of the goodnewssantabarbara.com team. My excitement comes from finally making the decision, and following through with the action, to invest my time and effort into the dream we envisioned when Good News Santa Barbara initially launched in 2014.

Our mission is to provide a space where we can share who and what inspires us as parents, partners, and individuals.

Please reach out to us, leave comments, contact us personally with anything that intrigues and inspires you.

Here are a few pics from our day on Stearns Wharf. We enjoyed a great lunch at Long Boards Grill.

A couple of happy campers

A unique and interesting attraction on the wharf is the Ty Warner Sea Center.

The Harbor Restaurant and Santa Barbara Shellfish Company are great dining experiences.

Eleanor is on her way to lil’ ninjas, karate for kids class at Martial Arts Family Fitness. We love the fun, learning atmosphere.

In the year we’ve attended we have observed Eleanor build a strong body, a disciplined mind, and a resilient spirit. Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and an Indomitable Spirit are the school tenets.

Your first class is free.

Check them out!

Finding the perfect workout shoe

The other day I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself to a nice pair of workout shoes, and a fun pair too. (wink wink)

Of course, being in the fashion industry I wanted them to still look good, but also comfort is the name of the game, especially with the workouts I do.  So my search began…

I saw a few in the magazines and on Instagram, but I decided to go search some out in person so I could try them on.  I wanted a share a few below that I loved and the ones I ended up purchasing. By the way, I think I have a new obsession with sports shoes. So many cool ones out there!

I bought these and I’m in LOVE!! You guys!!!! BUY THEM!

Also, bought these! Love them even more in person and are super fun with all of my different workout leggings.

I’d love to hear if you have any that you just love. As I mentioned above, This is clearly my new thing.

a visit to the farm

farm2new

Happy Monday! I know it’s Monday, but I’ve realized if I keep putting a negative connotation on Monday’s, they will never be good. So, here is to loving Monday’s, because for us this means our weekend with daddy is right around the corner.  Dave’s weekends are Tuesday and Wednesday!

That being said, here is a fun, little joint we love going to as a family. Fresh veggies, fruits, and farm animals.  Win, win!! The Farm Stead, is a local, organic farm, that you can pick your own berries, and other produce. The have completely revamped the farm, formally known as Classic Organic. They still work on a honor system, which is so old school, I love it! The whole experience makes you feel like the world is still such an honest, pure, blissful place.  If you are local, or somewhat local, check the farm out! I think you will love it as much as we do.

Earth Day

eleanor13 new

This past weekend we celebrated mother earth. Dave took Saturday off, which is a rarity, so we got to hang with daddy all day!  We enjoyed all of the activities that were happening in Alameda Park, for Earth Day. One of the great things about Santa Barbara, is there’s always so many different activities for families to enjoy!

There were lots of kid activities too, which was nice.  Eleanor had the chance to play the drums, which she loved.  She loves her music! We took a semester off, but she will be back to her music class in a couple of months.  It’s been such a great investment for her.

We listened to lots of live music, and snacked on lots of healthy goodness.  It’s always nice to just throw a few blankets down, relax, and listen to some good tunes.  I also had the chance to check out one of my favorites, Sun Potion.  They had a booth and were offering 20% off all of their products, so I totally scored!  If you know me, you know I love my herbs!

We tied up the weekend with a children’s concert on the UCSB campus, where Eleanor got to enjoy a little fun, with some of her tiny friends.

Hope everyone is having an epic week!
