Getting ‘me’ back!

Many of you know or may not know, but for the last (almost) year I have completely submerged myself into getting back in shape and eating healthy. After having Eleanor and going through IVF , I gained a lot of weight. Completely worth it, but not what my (usually) smaller frame was used to.  All of the meds associated with IVF really had my body feeling blah. So, last April, I made the decision to do something about it.

I started a local program here in Santa Barbara, called Jenny Schatzle Program. The first month was brutal. I had never worked out previously, I was lucky in that way.  Or, maybe not. Ha! A girlfriend of mine completely convinced me that I would soon get “addicted” to it, I laughed! If you know me though, you know that I always follow through and I’m pretty strong-willed, so I was determined to fall in love with this beast.

The classes are all HIIT, which is high intensity with a mix of cardio and weights. My first class I literally thought I was going to puke. Even one of the trainers told me I looked a little white.  But, I still came back again and again and long story short, I was becoming “addicted”.

I was also ready to gain “me” back again. I had put so much into trying to get pregnant, then being pregnant, having Eleanor and starting a business, that I forgot about taking care of myself, mentally, physically and spiritually.

I think mothers just naturally fall into this pattern.  I remember saying, even when I was pregnant, that no matter what, I wouldn’t forget to take care of myself. Then, the baby comes and it’s all different. Even after seeing Eleanor thriving in my belly, I was falling into the common pattern.  Completely fine, but I believe it’s important we don’t go years doing this, otherwise we do completely loose ourselves and it’s so hard to get back, if we ever do.

Approaching 40, I have to admit, I feel the best I have felt in years. My body looks good (yes, I’m tooting my own horn), my skin is coming back (from the weird acne you get from pregnancy and after), and I feel strong all around, physically, spiritually and mentally. All three very important for a healthy lifestyle, in my opinion.

Last week I shared some of my favorite workout shoes, today I wanted to share some of my FAVORITE workout pants. Ladies, they make your booty and body look good, no matter your size.  Trust me!  Here are my top picks that I own…

Finding the perfect workout shoe

The other day I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself to a nice pair of workout shoes, and a fun pair too. (wink wink)

Of course, being in the fashion industry I wanted them to still look good, but also comfort is the name of the game, especially with the workouts I do.  So my search began…

I saw a few in the magazines and on Instagram, but I decided to go search some out in person so I could try them on.  I wanted a share a few below that I loved and the ones I ended up purchasing. By the way, I think I have a new obsession with sports shoes. So many cool ones out there!

I bought these and I’m in LOVE!! You guys!!!! BUY THEM!

Also, bought these! Love them even more in person and are super fun with all of my different workout leggings.

I’d love to hear if you have any that you just love. As I mentioned above, This is clearly my new thing.

Real Snacks

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset

We are continuing our healthy eating segment over here. We have been long time fans of the GoMacro bars, so when we found out about their new THRIVE bars, by GoMacro, we knew we had to try them.

Like all GoMacro products, Thrive bars are USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO project verified, vegan certified, kosher certified, gluten-free certified and soy-free.

We were lucky enough to try all of the new flavors, nuts and sea salt, caramel coconut, chocolate peanut butter chip, blueberry lavender, ginger lemon, and almond apricot. ALL of them (yes, we are yelling), are all so amazing!!

What is so wonderful about this company, is the story behind them.  GoMacro started a little more than a decade ago to share about healthy and wholesome food.  When Amelia, the founder, was diagnosed with cancer, in 2003, she stopped eating anything that wasn’t grown in the ground. Living on a farm, she grew her own organic vegetables and fruits. As her health improved she and her family were inspired to start GoMacro. And, here we have this amazing bar. Their farm, based in Wisconsin, still remains an integral part of GoMacro products.

We love supporting family businesses and especially ones with such a dear cause.  If you’re looking for a good, clean snack bar, we strongly suggest trying the new Thrive bars or even the original GoMacro bars.

Enjoy the yumminess!

Chosen Foods

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset

We are continuing our healthy eating/cooking segment over here, and we have found a new favorite! Chosen Foods, they make a wide variety of cooking essentials.  We do a lot of cooking in our home. Matter of fact, we cook almost every night.

When cooking with different temperatures it’s important that you use the right oils. Chosen Foods makes that easy for you. They have their avocado oil spray, which is for higher temps, and their olive oil spray for lower temps. Both are sprays, which seriously makes life so much easier. Especially when you are roasting veggies all of the time, like we are.

They also make an amazing sesame drizzle oil, that we tried. This is the prefect oil to drizzle over your meal right before eating. It goes amazing with stir-fry. we also tried their quinoa and chia seeds, which you can never go wrong with using.

There are so many “healthy” choices out there these days, it’s important to know which companies are “truly” healthy. We love Chosen Foods, and believe the company is doing a superior job to make sure your health is number one!

The Perfect snack bar

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Hello!

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We did a lot of r&r around here. I have been doing a high intensity workout since April, and I have to say it’s been challenging, but good.  I have been fortunate or not fortunate, however you want to look at it, to not have to work out my whole life, until now.  I’m 39, and let’s just say my body doesn’t just drop weight like it use to.

All of that being said, I have recently started counting my macros. This has worked really well for me. Remember, everyone’s body is different, what works for one person may not work for another. This is what I needed. My personality is the type that one isn’t enough and ten isn’t enough either, so I wanted to find a balance. This also keeps me accountable, which is what I need.

I’m always searching for the best products for myself. Easy meals, on the go snacks, etc…When I came across Square Organics they sounded like the perfect snack bar. All organic and super clean ingredients, just what I like. I don’t have one favorite flavor, they are all amazing! The whole family actually liked them, even Eleanor. The macros fit right into my food diary for an easy snack, or even a meal if I’m really on the go.  Most of the time, they are a snack for me.

Head over to their site and check some out for yourself.  They were generous enough to offer our readers 20% off. Please use the code goodnewssantabarbara. There is no limit, so try them all!!!

Terra’s Kitchen // home delivery

terras kitchen10 new - CopyIf you have followed us for a while, then you know we are huge health fans, we cook at home a lot, and we like anything that is farm to table. When we were approached by Terra’s Kitchen to try their home delivery meals, we were super excited!

I have to be honest with you, I love cooking and even grocery shopping (I know, weird), but lately with the store being so busy, and the hubby working long hours (hospitality business), it sure is nice to have your meals planned out and your ingredients delivered.

However, that being said, we still want to keep our meals as clean as possible. So, when I did a little research on Terra’s Kitchen, I loved the fact that they are farm to table. Keeping all of their ingredients clean, all-natural, hormone free and no antibiotics.

Because it’s been so hot here in California, we stuck with a couple of grilling options. Tonight we had, grilled ny strip steak, with tomatoes, zucchini and basil chimichurri.  Super easy, and super good! That’s another bonus, EASY!

Head on over to our Instagram page, where we are hosting an awesome giveaway, with Terra’s Kitchen, that you won’t want to miss!

Also, we’d love for you to try Terra’s Kitchen. So, for our readers and first time users, please use the code GoodNews at checkout and receive $50 off $100 or more.

Go Raw

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

A while back we finished up our healthy, snacking series.  We loved being able to introduce some healthy snacks for the on-the-go person.  Keeping up with the healthy snacks, we found Go Raw. Go Raw uses all fresh, organic products to make their snacks. All of their products are fresh, living products, created with a gentle dehydration process. This all means you don’t have to feel guilty eating these yummy snacks.

We love raw snacks because of the increased energy, mental clarity, and of course, no preservatives. Our family thrives on healthy eating. We have completely cut out refined sugar, which I can tell you has made a huge difference. Try it for just a week, I promise your body will love it, and your sleep will be so much better.

Living healthy is a way of life for our family, we strive to eat as clean as possible. Our bodies feel so good, and knock on wood, we haven’t been sick in years.

Herbal Remedies+Fashion

I wanted to introduce to you our newest addition to Love Threads, our apothecary section. I strongly believe in everything fashionable, and that even includes how we take care of ourselves.  I’ve used all of our products that we are carrying, for a long while before adding them to our shop.  So I stand strongly behind them.

Our health is what will keep us going for a long, long time. There is nothing more beautiful than a healthy, glowing, strong woman. Instead of taking multiple supplements everyday, all you have to do is have a cup of one of our Moon Juice dusts, a spritz of our gypsy rose mist, and tend to your dosha, with a spritz of one of our Ayurveda mists.

Having a clean, fashionable lifestyle, has given me more gratitude for life. I have a clearer head, more energy (hello, to anyone with kiddos or works obscene hours), and my overall body, just feels good!

Below, I have shared some our newest products.  If you get a chance, pop over to our site to see, and read more in depth about them.

Peace~~~

beauty // pursoma

pursoma3 newpursoma4 newHappy Friday! Next up, for our all natural beauty series is, Pursoma. Everything about this company says perfect! Their beauty products detoxify, rejuvenate, and soothe the body, from the inside out. We were lucky to try the ocean potion bath, which is made to detoxify the body with the sea’s restorative minerals, stimulate circulation with sea salt, and eliminate toxins on a cellular level. WOW! is all we can say. It was absolutely amazing! Leaving our skin feeling wonderful. The other product we were lucky to try was the earth bound body mask

We had the chance to have a Q&A with CEO and owner, Shannon Vaughn, what a beauty…

1) What led you to start your business?

Pursoma was created because I faced a health crisis which I was confident was a result of environmental toxicity. Extremely stressful situations in my life; poor nutrition in my daily diet; and toxic hormonal disruptors in my beauty and skin care regime left me unwell. Unhappy with the prospects offered by traditional medicine, I engaged in holistic therapies guided by a nutritionist and homeopathic doctor that emphasized detox and rejuvenation.  Following my recovery, I worked closely with a nutritionist and biochemist to formulate potent, effective detox treatments that left me feeling vibrant and alive and gave me a sense of internal peace.  It was this process of “soma”, or transition, to wellness, along with the understanding I gained about what it meant to be truly healthy, that inspired me to want to spread this message to others and share the tools to achieve similar results.  Thus, Pursoma was born.

2) How do you incorporate a holistic lifestyle into your daily life?

I try to be conscious daily of what I consume, especially if I am on the go because then I have to be more focused about it. When I am at home I have developed a very healthy routine and I stick to that. Obviously there are times when things need to be adjusted, for instance I am pregnant now and felt the need to eat animal products because my body wanted them. But usually I make it very simple for myself and I look at a meal or menu or food item and say, can I see the origin of the food? Is it a whole food? And I try to eat as simply as possible.

3) Favorite items you can’t live without?

There is nothing I can’t live without. I have lived in so many different countries and environments around the world at various stages of my life, that I have learned that I can always adapt. But if I had to list a few essentials that feel really important to me

1. Lemon water in the morning followed by a super high quality green tea.

2. Pursoma Floral Defense which is a homeopathic remedy for living well in today’s modern world (not released yet, coming soon!!!!)

3. A really good body oil. I love body oil and apply it after shower and before bed to keep my skin hydrated, usually it’s unscented.

4) What does your daily routine look like?

In the morning, I have the juice of one lemon in 12-16 ounces warm water, then I have green tea or very little decaf coffee with coconut milk.  Next, before or after exercise, I have a fresh green juice that I make at home or that I get from a local juice store (fresh, rather than cold pressed. I like cold pressed juices for a cleanse but prefer to have the fiber from a fresh juice on a daily basis.) I also alternate at home between juice and a blended green drink. I exercise (either cycle indoors at home or go outdoors on my bike, depending on the weather). I work a lot so I make sure to drink at least 3 liters of water per day and I eat quite regularly even between meals, but always super healthy. I hate to wait till 8:00 pm for dinner, I find I feel much better if I eat earlier and don’t eat much at night.

5)We love the idea of the digital detox! What is your idea of the perfect digital detox?

I unplug daily, but when I do it for longer time periods, I get all my work done so that I feel relaxed when I totally disconnect.  I usually do this when I spend time at my farm because there is a terrible internet connection there (a good thing) and once I am outdoors it feels intuitive to me to not be connected to an electronic gadget; out there, technology just instinctively feels out of place, like being totally overdressed for a casual party.

6) Where do you see you and your company in 5 years?

I would like to see it reaching a much more mass market and communicating a clear message that we live in a fast paced world and we need to take time to detox and reboot. I want women and young girls to know how to protect themselves against urban toxicity, and offering tools to do that. I want to create a medication platform that can be accessible and attainable to all without it feeling like you need a particular company to teach you how to do it. By offering consumers products that combat environmental stressors and by providing helpful educational information about diet and wellness, we can encourage them to stay balanced and well in their lives. I want my customers to understand and FEEL that there is a new norm for what it really means to be healthy, both physically and mentally.
