Fall food

pins of the weekI’ve really been into cooking at home lately.  The weather is cooling down, and I feel like Fall is really here.  Comfort food is where it’s at for us right now. Anything I can bake or make in a skillet sounds delightful.  I found the salad above that reminded me of Fall, so I added it with all of my comfort dishes. ha!

spaghetti squash and kale gratin/pasta with butternut sauce, spicy sausage and baby spinach/

spicy three bean chicken salad/simple sesame chicken skillet/

soba noodles + ginger tahini with crispy kale, shallots and romaine

avocado festival

a7

This past weekend we had the annual avocado festival in town.  It’s actually located in Carpinteria, which is 10 minutes from Santa Barbara.  We go every year, and enjoy it every year.  They have avocado ice cream, lots of guac, and anything else you can make with avocados.  We tend to over indulge in eating in the matter of a couple of hours.

This year we had some amazing carne asade tacos with guac, strawberry shortcake with avocado drizzle, and funnel cakes.  It was all good!

There’s also a bunch of vendors that set up, so of course we did a little shopping. We ended the night listening to a couple local bands play.

Good times with good friends!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

a night on the river

river

Hello from Florida!

We are still here and still enjoying every moment of it.  This place is so beautiful.  It’s amazing how every which way you turn there is water, whether it’s an ocean or a river.  We happen to not only be by the beautiful Atlantic ocean, which is by far, WAY warmer than the Pacific ocean, but we happen to be by two gorgeous rivers.  The Indian river and the Banana river are the two that we cross to get to the ocean.  When I first arrived here I thought the rivers were the ocean, because they are so gigantic that you can’t see to the end of them.  Their pretty amazing.

We had dinner on the Indian river the other night, and it was tasty.  The seafood is to die for down here.  It was the perfect night.  The weather was great, which in Florida, especially this time of year can be a tad HOT, but it was nice and breezy this night.  We ate, drank and laughed, and of course had another good night, with another good meal, with wonderful company.

Thanks, Donovan’s and Bonefish Willy’s!

Figs happen to be my new favorite thing lately.  I was pretty sure when a girlfriend of mine handed me one, I wasn’t going to like it.  I remember my parents eating them when I was little (Italians are big on figs), and yuck, I did not like them. But, she insisted, and I have to be honest, she’s my Persian friend, who happens to make me try lots of strange foods, which I usually end up liking, so I tried the fig, and loved it!

Figs are one of the healthiest fruit you can eat.  They have lots of fiber, potassium, manganese and vitamin b6.  The health benefits are; lowers blood pressure, helps protect against breast cancer, insulin lowering leaf in diabetes, bone density promoter, and much more.

I found good, organic figs at Trader Joe’s.  You should try them, I think you may like them.  They’re so sweet and juicy.  I’m off to go find some yummy fig recipes.  Share some if you have any, please!

dinner with friends

sushi2

This past week we met up with some friends for dinner to celebrate a couple of birthdays, and for a little farewell gathering before we leave.  We had so much fun! It was good to laugh, eat, and joke around with each other.  I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older that I’d much rather have fewer good friends, than lots of acquaintances.   It just means more.  I’m at a stage in my life, where I don’t have time for petty stuff, like I used to.  I’m really working on being a better person, and living my life happy and free.  This group is some of the few I consider my/our good friends.  I’ve known the girls a bit longer than the guys, but they are some of the most humbled people I know.  Love you girls! (and boys too).

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Olvera Street

olvera pic4

The other day my mom and I visited Olvera street.  Olvera street is in the oldest part of downtown Los Angeles.  They have lots of authentic Mexican food, festivities, and clothing.  We did a little shopping and enjoyed some yummy enchiladas and tamales.  I haven’t been there since I was a little girl, so it was fun to go back and visit.  I love LA for all of its little nooks and crannies, they are like little hidden gems.  If you get a chance to go, you should, it’s a piece of California history that is pretty amazing.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Ojai

ojaipic

We’ve been on some adventures over here lately.  My mom is in town, and we pretty much haven’t stopped once.  Hubby has been working, as usual, and we have been cruising up and down the coast, and through the mountains.  The other day we decided to go to Ojai.  I love that place!  So did she.  I’ve been wanting to check out the Ojai Rancho Inn.  The place reminds me of something country/Indie, if you can only imagine.  That combination is right up my alley, and I’m looking forward to staying there, soon.  We also had lunch at one of my favorite spots, The Farmer and The Cook, which is an all organic farm-cafe marketplace.  If you’re ever in the area, stop by and at least try their smoothies, they are amazing!

Things may get a little slow around here in the coming months.  Our family has some fun, interesting projects we are working on, that are keeping us very busy.

Also, this month we are a sponsor over on Dani’s blog.  If you are a mom or mom-to-be, you should really check out her blog.  She gives lots of inspiring info and tips.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

pizza night

pizza 011

It’s not often that we carb-load around here, but we sure did the other day.  We made homemade pizza, well kind of.  I bought one of those pre-made doughs at Trader Joe’s, and we put our own toppings on top.  So easy and so good!  I like making our own pizza, that way we can add as much as we like or as little as we like.  We are meat lovers over here, so we used lots of different Italian meats.  This night we used salami, prosciutto, and capicola, and fresh mozzarella for the cheese.  It was yummy!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  And yes, I know all of my posts were about food this week.  We like to eat around here.  Ha!

Happy eating!

food and fourth 006

I’ve said it before and I’ll say again, it’s salad season for us.  We are trying to eat healthier.  After having the Habit, the most delicious hamburger joint in Santa Barbara, and California Pizza Kitchen, my face is breaking out like I’m fifteen again.  Our eating is slowly, but surely improving.  Over the weekend I made lots of cold, delicious salads.  I was a little naughty and added some delicious bleu cheese croutons, from Trader Joe’s.  Oops!

I’m off to the east coast for one day.  Yup you heard me right, ONE day!  Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
