Kimono love

Love Threads received a new shipment of kimonos this past week. We have to admit, this group could possibly be our favorite ones yet! The kimono is such an easy add, to make any outfit look that much better. Throw one on with cut-offs, white skinnies, denim skinnies, etc…the possibilities are endless.

Treat yourself to a little, mid summer essential, and I’m pretty sure you won’t have any regrets.

What to do when it’s HOT!!!

pop1I mean, really, it’s been 100 degrees here, and I can’t take it another day.  I remember this happened last year while I was pregnant, and now again. I’m so sorry if you’re pregnant and you live in Santa Barbara.  We have been getting creative with ways to stay cool (well, not that creative, but whatever). The old washcloth in the freezer, ice packs on the body, and today, we made popsicles.

This is seriously the easiest and actually a fairly healthy treat to make for you and your littles.  We used watermelon, because that’s what we had.  I still have a major addiction to watermelon, it all started while I was pregnant.  Here is the super simple recipe…

Makes 6 popsicles:

slice a half of a watermelon into large chunks and put it into the blender

a splash or two of filtered water

a drop or two of stevia liquid

blend it all together and poor into molds. We use these, and love them!

Enjoy!

kimonos

Kimono’s: There is something so simple and easy about throwing on a kimono. They make every outfit look stylish and fashionable.  I love throwing them on with jeans and a t-shirt.  It’s easy and you’re out the door in a minute.  Something we could probably all use a little help with.  They also make great cover-ups.

Love Threads just received a few different ones, and I love them all.  Here is a look at the newest styles…

summer salad

beachbbqandsalad 081

The other day while surfing the net, I came across a yummy, healthy looking salad.  Considering we REALLY enjoy salads around here, I thought I’d give it a try.  I love nothing more than an ice cold, summer salad.  I found this one on this lovely blog.  I made it pretty much the same, but you may want to go straight to the source.  Here is what I used:

2 zucchini

2 yellow squash

1 large shallot

sea salt

fresh lemon juice

white wine vinegar

olive oil

Italian seasonings

fresh Italian parsley

arugula

avocado

walnuts

First, I sliced the zucchini and squash VERY thin.  I put them in a colander and sprinkled them with coarse sea salt, and let them sit for a half hour.  While those were sitting, I sliced up the shallots, very thin.  I put the shallots in a bowl and covered them with vinegar, to soak.  I let them soak for about 10 minutes, then added the olive oil to the shallots. (I used a good amount of olive oil).  Then, I toasted the walnuts over the stove, on low heat and set them aside to cool.  Then, I rinsed the zucchini and squash off, and patted dry.  I put them in a large bowl and mixed in the shallot mixture and tossed in the roasted walnuts.  At the very end, slice up your avocado and I chopped up my arugula (you can just throw it in), mix everything and add a bit more sea salt and fresh squeezed lemon.  That’s it!

Enjoy!

currently noshing…

Healthy is where it’s at these days.  I’m loving all of the fruit, starting to be “in season”.  I went on a bit of a naughty snacking phase, but I’m back to the healthy eating.  I feel so much better when I eat the stuff my body really wants in it.  I love honeydew and watermelon, I could eat them all day long, everyday.  Both seem to satisfy that sweet tooth that I tend to get at night.  If I cut the fruit up and put it in a container in the refrigerator, I’m more likely to go grab that instead of running to the local (around the corner), snack shack for ice cream.  So here is to a healthy summer!

PS: I found this on one of my favorite blogs, and yes I’m going to treat myself to it this weekend.

Happy Weekend!

homemade popsicles

popsicles and chalk 003

I decided last weekend that we needed to make something to cool us off, from this weather we have been having lately.  It has been in the high 70’s, low 80’s this past week.  This may not sound extremely hot to some, but when you live in Santa Barbara the chances of having air conditioning are slim, so it’s hot!  We also had a horrible wildfire (“white fire”), which has burned thousands of acres.  The wind was also strong this week, which didn’t help.  Most of the fire seems to be contained, but please say prayers for the fire to be over, and that anyone affected is safe and sound.  Also, I had the adventure of feeling my first earthquake.  It was the weirdest feeling.  I was standing in a building, when the tiles on the ceiling began to shake, I quickly ran out of the building, confused.  I later learned you’re not suppose to go outside.  Looks like I need to do some catching up on my earthquake safety.  I’m from the Midwest, I know about tornadoes, not earthquakes.  I don’t really need to experience one of those anytime soon again.

On, a lighter note, make these yummy Popsicle’s.  I found my molds at Marshalls, but you can get them anywhere.  The molds I bought are actually the same ones that I have seen at Whole Foods.  Here you go…

1 1/2 cup watermelon

3/4 cup Fage 0% yogurt

pinch of salt

pinch of sugar

Put all of the ingredients into the blender, I use a Blendtec, and blend until smooth.

Pour into the molds and freeze.

So easy, so good.  Enjoy!!!
